#3DC2014: The Aftermath

I absolutely cannot believe it has taken me this long to finish posting all my looks for this challenge. I am posting this in real time and it is already November 4th! I just loaded the last post! How sad. I still have some challenge related topics to cover, hopefully I can hit them all in this blog post. Some of the things I wanted to cover are:

  • What I learned,liked,loved about this challenge
  • What I did during this challenge
So firstly, I loved everything about this challenge. I especially loved that I was finally interacting within the nail community on Instagram. Every day even before I posted my own picture I was checking out that tag to see what everyone else's nails looked like. I even went out on a limb and even commented (gasp) lol. But the amount of support I received from strangers was so encouraging and uplifting. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that people took time out of their day to follow me and comment on my pictures. Like today, @theconcretechic featured my TV test screen nails in one of her posts. WHAT. So awesome. I just really love the new people I found that I can share inspiration with. And that's really what this challenge is about right?

Also, I learned a few things about myself. I really pushed myself to new levels with this challenge. I was always surprised that some looks came out looking better than I could have ever expected. I also learned that the most loved nail looks (for me at least) are the least planned ones. I couldn't believe that some of my most simple looks beat out my more detailed and planned looks in terms of likes. Nonetheless, I loved all my looks. I also learned about what kind of lighting looks best for nails and that Brock's Galaxy S phone takes the best pics out of our two phones. :P

I really got through this challenge through meticulous planning. The second I knew I was gonna do this challenge, I was already putting ideas together in my brainstorming notebook. My Blue Meanies and Betsey Johnson looks were all sketched out in that book before I even pulled out my polishes. I honestly don't think I would have lasted if everyday I was just starting out with a plan. I also had the convenience of getting off early enough to get a head start on my looks before having to start dinner or something. I get off everyday between 3 and 4 pm which gave me at least a solid hour to remove my nail polish, clean and scrub my nails, let them air out and add a basecoat before I had to start dinner. I tried really hard to stick with my schedule, and of course Brock let me slide a couple times on dinner. When we went out of town, I did three looks in one evening, just so I didn't have to do them while we were enjoying family time and visiting.

What I did during this challenge

Ok so let's face it: sitting and doing your nails for at least 3 hours every day can leave you with some serious downtime. My brain has to be stimulated with sound if I'm doing something, whether it be music, TV, talking, etc. I think at the beginning I was so focused, I just had the TV on in the background, or some YouTube videos playing, but after a week or so, I was ready for something different. I had listened to an Audible book during work because we had an open Wifi connection in the office (sigh. the good ol days) So I started exploring audio books on YouTube, and lo and behold! a wealth of books at my fingertips! and for free I might add! So I started off with the popular titles, just to see what all the hype was about. I listened to The Giver, Gone Girl, and The Fault in Our Stars.

I started The Giver while I was at work and finished it in one evening. Gone Girl took about ten days and OOOOMMGGGG. Them people are crazy. It was hard just to restrict my listening time to just when I was doing nails I totally wanted to hurry and find out what happened. -.- I still haven't convinced Brock to take me to go see the movie, but I was sooo pumped to see it after reading (listening to) the book. I highly recommend it for anyone who loves suspense and doesn't mind being on an emotional roller coaster. Seriously, I felt like I needed some medication to get through to the end!

The Fault in Our Stars was sensational as well. Definitely worth the hype. I fell in love with the characters and the quirkiness of their personalities. I also have not seen this movie, I'm waiting for Netflix to come through for me on this one, so hopefully soon. I can totally see how it was a tearjerker! I didn't cry listening to the audiobook thankfully - I was probably too detached with everything else going on.

So after listening to these first two, I did some exploring and decided to find something suspenseful Unfortunately, the pool became slimmer after a while, probably after someone flagged them for copyright issues (?) But I came across The Shining by Stephen King. I looooooove the movie, but I heard that it was a loose interpretation of the book and I wanted to see for myself. It turned out to be pretty freaking awesome. I have read a lot of Stephen King and so has Brock, so he really can do no wrong, I'm just glad I had an opportunity to delve into this book. If I could choose the movie or the book for being better, I would probably choose the book. First because it really gave a background for the characters before coming to the hotel and second because Mr. Hallorann lives at the end! haha oops spoiler!

So after The Shining was over and I couldn't get Doctor Sleep on audiobook, we conveniently got Netflix and hooked up the TV in the mani cave. So with the help of Google Chromecast,, I started streaming TV seasons to the TV. Damn I love technology. There is a pretty sweet setup in there now!
So anyway, I delved into the American Horror Story seasons. I had always been intrigued by the show, but I never for some reason settled down to watch it. I've never been a loyal TV program watcher. But I definitely settled down for this show! I fell in love with it after the first episode. I am shamelessly head over heels for Evan Peters. Especially thanks to Tate Langdon. Unfortunately I could only watch seasons 1 and 2 but I finished in time to watch Season 4 on FX :)) We might have to save my true feelings for this show for another blog post.

I think I did a great job of exploring not only nail art but other popular books and shows. I definitely didn't stay idle during dry time that's for sure!!

Day 31 #31DC2014: Honor Nails You Love

Day 31 #31DC2014: Honor Nails You <3

Nails that i have always admired were the absolutely outrageous, too much bling, how-can-you-wipe-your-ass nails. However impractical, the creativity behind it is what I have always admired. I did some research to get a good idea of what the general set up looks like as far as arranging the pearls and rhinestones and other acrylic decorations. I knew that I couldn't actually create the acrylic accessories, so I paid a visit to Sally's and picked up a few packages of stick on flowers. I also picked up some large rhinestones and pearls from Hobby Lobby. They only had super large pearls in the packets, so I just bought those scrapbook stick on pearl letters and peeled the pearls off the glue strip. (haha ghetto, I know but you couldn't tell the difference!)

I kept my background neutral with my go-to OPI Bubble Bath and sponged on some gold nail polish. Pretty sure it was Goldeneye by OPI and Mariah Carey's Pure 18k gold topcoat (thanks clearance at Ulta!)

After this, I simply placed my bigger flowers and pearls on first, then started to fill in with smaller items until it formed the shape I wanted on the nail. After I was done, I just made sure to add plenty of shiny topcoat over the entire nail.

I only wore these for a day, but they actually weren't really too bad. The only thing I really had to get used to was the weight of it all! They didn't get snagged and I didn't have any problems in the restroom...*cough* if you catch my drift *cough*

Enough talking, let's get to the photossssssss

Day 30 #31DC2014: A Tutorial

Day 30 #31DC2014: A Tutorial

I really didn't know what I was going to do for this day, but I did know whose tutorials I was going to choose from: LOVE4NAILS! Absolutely love her designs. I've been watching her videos since the very beginning and she has always had such creative and original approaches to nail art. She has always made me feel like I didn't have to have the latest or the greatest polishes to do outstanding nail art. I decided to do the nails inspired by her tutorial called "Colorful Abstract Nail Art Design Tutorial Stripes & Dots" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cagsn3j7qA) I tried to do them exactly as she did - I think they came out looking fabulous! I'm so glad I could finally pay tribute to someone who has always been an inspiration for nailart.

Day 29 #31DC2014: The Supernatural

Day 29 #31DC2014: The Supernatural

This one kind of threw me for a loop and I think I was more excited to do the last two than I was for this prompt. Then I saw HannahRoxNails(https://www.youtube.com/user/pixiepolish) post a smoke effect tutorial, and I thought it was just so ethereal looking, so I thought that would fit perfectly for this theme. Then I went off and changed the name of the prompt all over Insty haha. I kept calling it "Paranormal" oops. haha.

Bonus: My pointer finger pattern came out looking like the profile of a creepy man with a big nose. Can you see it?

Day 28 #31DC2014: A Flag

Day 28 #31DC2014: A Flag

There is no other flag to do on this day but the flag of TEXAS. If I do this challenge again, it will always be Texas. My entire dining room is Texas themed! I went for a traditional Texas flag. I posed with one of my fave necklaces in some of the pictures.

  • Sally Hansen White On
  • OPI Coca-Cola Red

Day 27 #31DC2014: Artwork

Day 27 #31DC2014: Artwork

I think either I was losing steam or I bit off more than I could chew on these nails. I decided to tackle Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans for this theme. I figured I had enough colors to execute it. What I didn't figure in was how teeny tiny the details were on these things. I think it came out decent, but I wish I had something that would make the details a little neater. Cuticles are a little messy also =/

  • OPI Coca-Cola Red
  • OPI Amazon Amaz-off
  • L'Oreal Fluo Azur
  • Sally Hansen Mellow Yellow
  • Sally Hansen Pacific Blue
  • Sally Hansen White On
  • Sally Hansen Kook-a-Mango

Day 26 #31DC2014: A Pattern

Day 26 #31DC2014: A Pattern

After I saw this prompt I immediately knew I wanted to try my hand at quilted nail. I think my execution of it was terrible!! I used Sinful Colors Black on Black and OPI Push and Shove for the dots. Then I topped with Essie Matte About You Topcoat.

Day 25 #31DC2014: Fashion

Day 25 #31DC2014: Fashion

This prompt is pretty much in the same category as the delicate print - I don't really have much to go off of. Of course I have an appreciation for fashion, but I'm definitely not a fashion forward person. The only person I do try to keep up with is Betsey Johnson! I adore her. There used to be a Betsey Johnson store in the Galleria in Houston, and although I couldn't afford her stuff at the time, I would go through and look at all the clothing and jewelry. It was just so unique and beautiful! Then when she made her comeback and started having her merchandise sold in stores like Macy's and Dillard's I started my collecting! Brock has even gotten in on the fun - we would make special trips to stores to see what new Betsey stuff was in. I have a nice collection of what we like to call "pieces" lol. I have large blingy necklaces like gangstas do - except mine are of unicorns and peacocks and rainbows ;).

For the nails, I knew I had to throw in as much hot pink as possible! It's not Betsey if it ain't hot pink!!  I wanted to incorporate all the things that are considered trademark for her brand: hot pink, roses, animal print, and of course BLING! So I did her signature floral print which is bright yellow with pink roses. Then I created a skull with rhinestones and a cheetah print background, although you can't see it very well Next I painted her perfume bottle called TooToo on my pointer finger, complete with lightning bolt! :) I really liked that detail of the look. Then i painted her famous runway shirt on my ring finger. I so wish I could get my paws on one of those shirts! Then finally, I painted her signature on my thumb. Overall, I think these turned out magnificent! I didn't want to take these off. It was days like this that mad me wish I had painted them on falsies so I could keep them forever, but I guess a bajillion pictures are going to have to do!

  • Color Club Wicker Park
  • OPI Push and Shove
  • OPI I Snow You Love Me (for the skull)
  • Sally Hansen Mellow Yellow
  • Cosmetic Arts Hot Pink
  • Funky Fingers Lazer Pink
  • OPI Coca-Cola Red
  • Day 24 #31DC2014: A Book

    Day 24 #31DC2014: A Book

I hate to admit it, but I have stopped being an avid reader over the years. I kind of lost interest in books for a while (thanks college) but being with Brock has renewed my interest. He always tells me about books he's read and it inspires me to be on the lookout for some good reads. It also helps that I have a Kindle Fire, so I can browse through thousands of books every now and then. Unfortunately the only recent books I've read are The Fault in Our Stars and Gone Girl. TFIOS nails had already been done, and there wasn't really anything I could depict from Gone Girl besides frustration and bewilderment ;) So I decided to go with something with vibrant colors that everyone could recognize.

Enter: A Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

This is one of the most colorful books I remember from my childhood. The abstract painting of the caterpillar and alllll the food he ate gave me plenty to work with. I don't think you can go wrong with choosing colors, almost every color was used! I don't even have a complete list of polishes I used. I also used acrylic paints. I think I just grabbed what looked similar to the illustrations for the books.

    Day 23 #31DC2014: A Movie

    Day 23 #31DC2014: A Movie

Today, I have Pitch Perfect nails!! I was super excited about doing these! This is one of the most enjoyable movies ever! The plot is hilarious and the characters are so lovable! I decided to do each nail based on Beca's love of making music, the Barden Bellas' pitch pipe and scarves, the Treblemakers outfit, and the flying burrito! Everything is hand painted. I even used studs for the buttons on the jacket. I swirled some cheesy looking colors around to make the burrito look like it was oozing out melting cheese. These were so fun to do, it made me wanna bust out the movie and watch it! haha
